Andy practises with the avalanche transceivers

Tea came at 8am. By 8:30am I was up and having a wash. I went to have a shave but the blade on my razor was blunt. I tried sharpening it with my metal file but to no avail. Breakfast was eaten at 9am in the mess tent. I had muesli, omelette and peanut butter rotis. After breakfast I hand-washed my dirty clothes again, using a bowl and river water. Two deer were spotted hopping across the screes on the other side of the river. My hands soon became numb in the icy waters. I didn't envy our porters who washed our dishes in the river after every meal.

I returned to the mess tent at 11am and read my book for an hour before reading the instructions for the avalanche transceivers. Lunch was served at 1pm and consisted of rice, dhal and soya meatballs. After lunch I taught the others how to use the avalanche transceivers. I hid one transceiver under a rock on the scree slope while the others took it in turn to find it using the second transceiver. Afterwards Andy and I worked out the trips and events to include in the Outdoor Club's 2001-2002 calendar.

Jon has a play

At 4pm we ate fried onion bhajis and drank cups of tea.

Packing for the following day's trek to set up Advanced Base Camp began at 5:30pm and was interrupted only by the arrival of green-grey soup in the mess tent at 6pm. Having finished packing it was back to the mess tent at 7pm for tea. The rice, potato and green bean mix and some other lumpy brown soup mix was eaten and washed down with the usual hot orange juice.

After the meal we drank our cups of tea or cocoa and exchanged the emergency contact numbers, so we all had a copy. Sonam returned our filled up water bottles and we requested breakfast, lunch and twenty-four rotis. We repeated it several times before Sonam understood what we had asked for. I'm not sure if this was because of his poor English or because of disbelief at being asked for so many rotis. We retired to our tent for sleep at 8:30pm.
